What’s available and where

Preserving and maintaining the nation’s built heritage is also part and parcel of preserving the environment in which we live. That environmental husbandry extends to the materials we use in the restoration projects we undertake and new additions to the built heritage. Re-using and recycling is central to that work and is typified by the extensive use of architectural salvage.

A whole industry has developed around architectural salvage, with specialist firms offering a wide range of materials rescued from building which could not be saved. From stonework to timber and from whole statues to fragments of friezes, material is available for re-use by architects and contractors, allowing them to avoid the necessity of manufacturing new pieces.
