Northcot Brick launches the 'Old Scotch Common'

Northcot Brick, one of the UK’s independent brick manufacturers, has launched the ‘Old Scotch Common’, a new line of traditional wire cut bricks, which replicates the appearance of the old ‘Giscol’ Scotch Common.

Widely used in industrial towns in the North of England, the original Giscol common brick, which was made from shale clays, was well known for its rough-cast hard burnt appearance, perforated surface and colour variation.

Northcot has now used its brick matching expertise to create the Old Scotch Common as a characterful brick with similar irregularities and rough hue, making it suitable for small building projects and the renovation of older properties particularly in the North.

“There is still clearly considerable demand for this distinctive looking brick in the North of England,” said Michael Brown, managing director of Northcot Brick Ltd. “Our master brick makers have managed to capture the unique qualities of the original Giscol in order to create a much sought after modern replacement.”

Traditionally made and fired in a ‘coal fired’ kiln in order to create its naturally random blend of colours and textures, the Old Scotch Common is available in both 65mm and 73mm sizes in order to suit both old and modern properties. A range of British Standard special types is also available.

The Old Scotch Common manufactured to the latest European standards, including F1 rating for Frost Resistance BS EN 771-1: 2003.
