Reggiani helps to enlighten St Clements, Hastings

A project to upgrade the lighting at St Clements Church in Hastings has made extensive use of Narancia, Varios and Bisio luminaires from Reggiani. The luminaires were specified by building services engineers CB Associates for their ability to complement the church’s architecture while contributing to reduced lifecycle costs.

The current St Clements was built in 1380, though there has been a St Clements in Hastings since before the Roman conquest. It was therefore important that the new lighting was sympathetic to the building’s rich history while taking full advantage of current lighting technologies. The fact that this objective was achieved is evidenced by the church winning the Ecclesiastical Building category in the Sussex Heritage Trust Awards 2013.

To light the nave and side aisles, Reggiani’s Narancia wall-mounted projectors with 70W metal halide light sources have been used to provide both direct and indirect light distribution to accentuate the architectural features. Narancia fittings are inherently flexible, using interchangeable optics that will enable the church to easily alter the light distribution in the future if required.

For lighting general areas a number of different Varios wall and track-mounted luminaires were selected. These comprise 70W metal halide fittings with wide/medium beam and dimmable AR111 low voltage halogen fittings with medium/narrow beams. Selected Varios fittings are motorised to enable the remote adjustment of light distribution whilst also affording greatly improved flexibility.

The Varios luminaires are supplemented by dimmable Bisio adjustable downlighters recessed beneath the mezzanines.

The final result is a modern lighting installation that complements the architecture of the church while providing the flexibility to adjust the lighting for different activities.

The fact that all of the Reggiani fittings used were standard production models also means that future maintenance will be greatly facilitated.
