AuraCast technology improves accessibility at St Michael’s, Arlecdon
St Michael’s Church in Arlecdon, a beautiful historic building right at the heart of the local community, has recently taken a significant step forward in improving accessibility.
Working with the team from Blaydon Communications the church now has a cutting-edge AuraCast™ system, replacing the traditional induction loop technology to better serve members of the congregation with hearing difficulties.
What is AuraCast™?
AuraCast™ is a new wireless audio broadcasting technology developed as part of the Bluetooth LE Audio standard. Unlike normal induction loops, which require extensive cabling and physical installation, AuraCast™ uses Bluetooth-enabled devices to transmit high-quality audio directly to compatible hearing aids, cochlear implants or smartphones.
This means that anyone with a supported device can connect effortlessly and enjoy clear sound during services. Even those without their own compatible device can still use the system as the church has invested in a number of neck worn devices to make sure everyone can benefit from the new system.
Ideal for churches
Historic and listed buildings, such as St Michael’s, present lots of challenges for the installation of traditional hearing loop systems. Running cables through stone walls or ornate woodwork often requires special permissions and can risk damaging the fabric of the building.
AuraCast™ eliminates these issues by offering a wire-free solution, preserving the integrity of heritage architecture while still delivering high-quality audio – and, of course, providing the congregation with exceptional accessibility and inclusion.
Key benefits include:
- Preservation of historic features: no intrusive cabling or structural alterations.
- Superior audio quality: clear, consistent sound without interference.
- Ease of use: congregants simply connect via their hearing device, smartphone or borrow one of the on-site listening devices.
- Future-proof technology: AuraCast™ supports multiple listeners simultaneously, making it ideal for growing congregations.
A step towards inclusivity
By adopting AuraCast™ St Michael’s has demonstrated a clear commitment to inclusivity and innovation while respecting its historic character. The technology ensures that everyone, regardless of hearing ability, can fully participate in worship and community life.
Paul Dougherty, managing director of Blaydon Communications, said: “AuraCast™ has burst on to the scene in recent months. It was a pleasure working with the team from St Michael’s to integrate a modern solution in such an historic house of worship.”
