Relighting project adds to cathedral’s inclusivity while reducing its footprint

Salisbury Cathedral has recently completed a transformative relighting project, harnessing innovative LED technology from leading manufacturer ERCO. The initiative has elevated the cathedral’s visual and spiritual presence, aligning with its commitment to sustainability and accessibility. The new lighting solutions have significantly lowered the cathedral’s carbon footprint, reducing internal energy use by over 80% and saving approximately 30 tonnes of CO2 a year.

Rev Kenneth Padley, Canon Treasurer at Salisbury Cathedral, described the outcome as: “simply spectacular…The cathedral is better lit than at any time during its 800-year history.”

The need for an upgrade arose when sourcing parts for the outdated halogen lighting system became unsustainable. Working closely with the cathedral, Spectrum Electrical Group and ERCO installed energy-efficient LED units, ensuring a seamless integration into the cathedral’s historic fabric. The project was completed on time and within budget, with significant support and a generous grant from the Friends of Salisbury Cathedral.

Illuminating 800 years of history

Enhanced illumination has revealed previously unseen details, such as remnants of medieval paint under the triforium arches. Rev Padley commended the team’s efforts.

“I am delighted with the feedback received about the effect of the lighting for both worship and visiting,” he enthused. “It balances illumination with atmosphere for liturgy, and there are parts of the building that our guides can show off as never before: medieval paint under the triforium arches and the blocked doorway to the former glazing workshop above the Trinity chapel, to name but two.”

Stepping into the cathedral, one is instantly overwhelmed by the beauty of the architecture and the atmosphere. Looking up to the ceiling, details which were previously in the dark are now visible for all to enjoy and the 12th-century arches at the triforium level and clerestory level are perfectly illuminated using ERCO’s Optec New spotlights, creating an uplighting effect which brings the architecture to life. ERCO’s Parscan spotlights have been integrated at a height of 27 metres, providing perfect illumination levels of the cathedral floor below and its features, such as the nave and the crossing.

Moving from halogen to LED has had a profound impact visually, environmentally and for safety. The replacement has significantly reduced fire risk and supported the cathedral’s access priorities, improving illumination for those with impaired sight and mobility. The cathedral previously had some dark areas, but with ERCO’s LED technology this heritage building now holds a warm and inviting atmosphere – it is truly a symbol of light.

Inclusivity and community

Salisbury Cathedral is a place of worship for the community. It was therefore crucial for the cathedral to maintain and enhance its accessibility, curating a space that welcomes all: including those with visual impairments, physical disabilities and neurodivergences. Spectrum Electrical Group and ERCO have successfully integrated solutions which provide visual comfort, with flicker-free and glare-free luminaires.

ERCO’s LED technology has significantly increased the lux levels, providing light which allows visitors to walk safely through the aisles, read their hymn books and feel comfortable, using a warm 3000K. That inclusivity and flexibility has been achieved and further supported using DALI technology, allowing control and scene setting for various activities: not only improving visibility and accessibility, but also allowing the space to be used by all for workshops, music and conversation as well as praise.

Another significant benefit of the relighting, in addition to enhancing the visitor experience and reducing fire risk, is its contribution to lowering the cathedral’s carbon footprint. Addressing climate change remains a key strategic priority for the cathedral and aligns with the Anglican Church’s mission to support the most vulnerable communities.

Rev Padley commented: “Responding to climate change is an essential part of our responsibility to safeguard God’s creation. With the previous halogen lamps coming to the end of their natural life, our aim has been to reduce the cathedral’s carbon footprint and provide high-quality discreet lighting to showcase the building’s heritage. The project has been everything that we could have hoped for and much, much more.”
