Hargreaves' Lock Gates

Hargreaves’ lock gates contract helping keep the Cam a punting paradise

Waterways restoration experts Hargreaves Lock Gates have installed new lock gates for a Grade ll listed lock on Cambridge’s River Cam.

The Jesus Green lock lies in a conservation area and forms a major gateway to the river’s “middle” section. Known as the College Backs, this section is world renowned as a “punting paradise” and is synonymous with the University of Cambridge which marked its 800th anniversary in 2009.

Hargreaves’ lock gate experts were commissioned to replace all four of Jesus Green lock’s leaky wooden gates with exact replicas, hewn from “green” European oak.

The existing oak gates, which also feature cast-iron balance beams, were built in 1981 but had weathered before their time and the lock had serious leaks. The team from Hargreaves worked alongside Cam Conservancy staff to drain down the lock before removing the gates using a tracked-crane, to protect surrounding parkland.

The gates were then transferred to Hargreaves’ workshops in Halifax where they were measured meticulously and reproduced and the ironwork repaired. Work to the lock, which dates back to 1836 or 37, took around five weeks to complete.

Cam Conservators River Manager Philippa Noon explained: “Conservators agreed to allocate money for this project as part of their five-year business plan. Hargreaves were chosen because they had “the right vibe”, were highly competitive and most willing to listen to our specific site requirements. They also came with a personal recommendation.”

Reducing the leaks will improve water retention along the College Backs, which are closed to motorised motor vessels from April to September to protect the use of punts, canoes and dinghies the area is famous for.

The Environment Agency is also planning a programme of repairs to sluices on the same section of the River Cam, including the creation of an elver pass to help eels migrate upstream.

In addition to lock gates and tidal doors, Hargreaves Lock Gates manufactures and installs a range of wood and wood-steel composite foot and bridle bridges, using sustainable timber sourced from FSC, PFC or Keurhout-accredited suppliers.
