Church facilities get welcome upgrade

Clapton’s United Reformed Church – The Round House – is a busy hub for the local community and homeless. Kent-based Hyssop Project were commissioned by the church to upgrade its male and female toilets. As well as ensuring a high standard of finish, the brief was to provide both a durable and cost-effective solution.

Company founder Sheahan Thorne takes up the story: "We stripped out all the existing units, including urinals, toilets and basins, replaced pipework and removed the vinyl flooring. Essential electrical work was carried out to relocate lighting and fuse spurs in line with current NIC Regulations. We also installed recessed wafer-thin (12mm) light panels and new Vent Axia hand dryers.

"In the male toilets we installed new Ideal Standard surface-mounted urinals, cisterns and chrome pipework finishes along with concealed back-to-wall pans from the Concept Space range. The female toilets were equipped with Tempo Close Coupled back-to-wall WC pans.

"We built vanity units – customised for each room – using 18mm moisture-resistant MDF, painted with acrylic eggshell for a durable finish.

"The male toilets were fitted with under-counter wash basins from the Loop and Friend range of Villery Boch; the females with Armitage Shanks Marlow 21 Oval. Pure white quartz worktops were specified with percussion taps from Mira Rada.

"Walls were tiled with white Johnson field tiles (200x100mm) and edged with a chrome bead. These were finished with grey grout and mastic to match from Mapei. Mirrors (measuring 1200×1200) were incorporated within the tiles over the basins. We laid the floor with 2mm Altro Vinyl floor in Temple Grey with a 100mm coving skirting heat-welded to ensure seal the joints from moisture.

"A Magrini vertical wall-mounted baby change unit was also provided."
