Belfast Cathedral celebrates 120th anniversary with new chairs
With Belfast Cathedral celebrating the 120th anniversary of their consecration, they decided to replace their old, non-stacking seating.
They looked at three companies and many sample chairs. After testing samples, two of Alpha Furniture’s chairs were among the favourites.
However, the Very Reverend Stephen Ford (Dean) asked if they could combine the back of one model with another model the company do.
As they wanted to help ‘yes’ was the answer and ‘The Belfast chair’ was born.
The Dean wanted a ‘hybrid chair’ (padded seat/wooden back) that would be comfortable for the congregation, yet stack well for his Verger team.
He also wanted attractive and safe hanging provision for the hassocks/kneelers which would need to hang on the new chairs also. Alpha subsequently designed a bespoke hassock pin the bespoke Belfast chair. They also stain-matched the frame colour for the project. These are to be the 200 ‘main’ chairs, for use by the congregation each Sunday.
Alpha feel very privileged to now be part of the next generation of the cathedral’s operations and fabric and congratulate Stephen and his team on a terrific re-ordering.
