Transformative technology for Welsh chapel earns praise in Y Tyst
Capel Gellimanwydd in Ammanford has benefitted from a complete makeover, including an array of new audio-visual equipment provided by leading integrator, Vaughan Sound.
The chapel dates back as far as 1782, making it the oldest in this former coal mining town in Carmarthenshire. Rebuilt in 1836 before extension in 1865, a vestry was later added in 1882.
Welsh is the primary language used for events and services at this popular worship venue, that boasts a healthy congregation of all ages.
Vaughan Sound was appointed following the company’s previous work at similar churches and chapels across the region.
Capel Gellimanwydd required a range of AV equipment to bring it into the 21st century and significantly enhance its offering to worshippers and users of the building.
All new systems ultimately had to blend seamlessly into the chapel’s décor and existing furnishings, while not detracting from the impressive 19th century interior.
Thanks to the audio-visual design and installation expertise of Vaughan Sound, Capel Gellimanwydd now benefits from energy-efficient LED lighting for performances; including choir concerts, enactments, and recitals. Prolight Slim Pars provide a smooth wash of vibrant colours, whilst RGBW zoom fresnels deliver high performance light output from the balcony to the stage below. All performance stage lighting is managed via an intuitive, easy-to-operate DMX controller.
Audio reinforcement comes by way of a pair of 10” cabinet loudspeakers on floor mounted stands – these can be easily removed from the stage area and stored away when not in use. These have been combined with a powered mixing desk with eight microphone channels and control of up to 12 inputs. The mixer is discretely located in a dedicated AV cabinet in the corner of the chapel.
To complete the enhanced setup, two 60” LED displays act as superb visual aids, mounted on the balcony either side of the stage. With the ability to take HDMI, VGA, and audio feeds directly from the onsite PC, they are capable of showing high-definition imagery and videos.
Vaughan Sound has successfully delivered integrated audio-visual systems that have wowed guests, visitors, and worshippers at Capel Gellimanwydd.
Remaining conscious of the aesthetics and delicate nature of the chapel, Vaughan Sound’s expert team have provided leading AV, sound, and lighting equipment to ensure the venue is the most technologically advanced Welsh Non-Conformist chapel in the region.
Y Tyst (the Union of Welsh Independents’ weekly newspaper) later reported: ‘Adnoddau Rhagorol (Excellent Resources) - Most meetings were held at Gellimanwydd Chapel which is now in its new form. This was a very suitable location for our meetings due to the excellent resources in terms of parking, building and technology. Recently the chapel has been refurbished stylishly by building a low-level stage. Two large TV screens were placed either side, numerous electrical points, lighting, and sound system of the highest quality were installed. This refurbishment is a credit to the Minister and members and an excellent example of what can be done with a traditional building.’
