Second Tuesday Talks - Philip Gaches: Holidays with tools
For their March Second Tuesday Talk, the York Consortium for Craft and Conservation are excited to continue the theme of 'Conservation Without Borders' with Philip Gaches. As an expert in traditional plasterwork, Philip's work graces some of our most treasured Royal Palaces and his knowledge is in demand by craft professionals around the world.
During his talk, Philip will delve into the intricacies of travelling to remote and hard-to-reach locations with his tools. He'll share his experiences of arriving with little preparation, and being greeted by numerous delegates, as well as discussing how he sources materials and resources to provide the necessary information to his clients.
What's more, Philip will touch upon the vastly different social aspects of each work location, comparing the challenges of working in a remote Transylvanian village with no proper road for 10 miles and only one car, to the hustle and bustle of Yangon, Myanmar, with its high volume of traffic, noise, and people.
Philip will also explore the decision-making process involved in determining whether spending money on his services is a wise investment or a waste, drawing on his wealth of experience in the industry.
Finally, he'll share his philosophy of supporting and encouraging those he meets through his work, offering ongoing advice and mentoring long after his courses have ended.
Following Philip's talk, he will be joined by Bethan Griffiths, YCCC Committee member, for a Q&A session. Participants will be able to raise questions for discussion, and are encouraged to submit questions ahead of time, by emailing This email address is being protected from spambots.
