Reinterment of Richard III Project at Leicester Cathedral

Leicester Cathedral, in conjunction with the Richard III Society, the University of Leicester and the City Council, began the Reinterment of Richard III Project in 2013. The project, to provide King Richard’s final resting place, involves a series of changes to the inside of the Cathedral to create a significant space for the raised tomb, with a new floor, special lighting and new stained glass windows. The £0.5 million project was completed in 2015.

Martin Thomas Associates were appointed to undertake all the Mechanical and Electrical Consultancy Work with a view to future phases of work and will maintain a close on site involvement with the works throughout construction. Architects were Van Heyningen & Haward, Cost Consultants were MDA, Lighting Designers were Light Perceptions and the Structural Engineers were Price & Myers.

The project won the RIBA East Midlands Award 2017 and RIBA East Midlands Project Architect of the Year 2017.

The Very Reverend David Monteith, Dean of Leicester, commented:

"Now the dust is settling on the amazing project for the reinterment of King Richard III, I wanted to write to you as someone who was involved as one of our key contractors during that period. We have received numerous expressions of thanks and good wishes at the Cathedral, and on behalf of the city and county relating to all aspects of the project, not least the craftsmanship and attention to detail that went into the physical works carried out in the Cathedral to make it all possible.

"We feel ourselves to have been exceptionally fortunate in those we have worked with, both professionally and personally. My thanks go to you and all in your team for what we have achieved together."
