Northcot Brick wins prestigious Self Build Award

Northcot Brick, one of the UK’s foremost independent brick manufacturers, has received a prestigious 2015 ‘Build It Award’ for the quality of its brickwork.

As this year’s outright winner in the ‘Best Masonry Home’ category, Bridge House, a traditional brick and flint family house in Norfolk, was highly praised by the judges for its outstanding craftsmanship and brick detailing, which they said ‘could not be faulted’.

Over 65,000 of Northcot’s Stratford Mellow handmade bricks were specified for the house and gardens, many of which were cut on site and laid in a traditional Flemish bond. Bespoke moulds were created for the many matching decorative ‘specials’, which ranged from plinths, bullnoses, cants and parapets to several courses of corbelling with intricate dentil work at the eaves.

According to the owners the traditional character and individuality of Northcot’s handmade bricks were integral to the design.

“Having looked at several brick manufacturers’ ranges, we were instantly attracted to the ‘living glow’ of this particular light red textured blend, which has a unique character which complements the architecture of the region,” said owner David Dunnett.

Renowned for their craftsmanship, Northcot’s team of master brickmakers use traditional benchmould techniques that have hardly changed over the centuries and still fire in one of the country’s last remaining coal-fired kilns in order to achieve their distinctive qualities.

Northcot bricks are manufactured to British and European standards, including F2 rating for Frost Resistance BS EN 771-1: 2003 and are hand checked to ensure consistency of quality throughout before dispatch.
