Traditional Lime

Lime: it’s better for buildings – and for the environment

It is now fairly well known that cement is not good for old buildings and that lime mortar should be used. But why? What are the advantages and what are the disadvantages? In order to begin to answer those questions it is necessary to understand the nature of traditional building, the process by which buildings used to be built, and how it differs from modern construction, the process by which we build today.

Audio Visual

Audio visual equipment in church buildings

This guidance is issued by the Church Buildings Council under section 55(1)(d) of the Dioceses, Mission and Pastoral Measure 2007. As it is statutory guidance, it must be considered with great care. The standards of good practice set out in the guidance should not be departed from unless the departure is justified by reasons that are spelled out clearly, logically and convincingly.

Church Insurance | Ecclesiastical

Church insurance risk

You need to ensure that reasonable precautions are in place at your church to keep it safe for those who use it. To do this, you need to think about what might cause harm to people.

You will then need to decide if the precautions already in place are adequate. If they are not, you may need to identify further action to prevent any danger. When done formally, this is known as a risk assessment.

Lead Roofing

The benefits of lead roofing

Lead is one of the oldest materials in the roofing industry and is still commonly used throughout the world today.

Lead roofing is a traditional roofing method which has been used in the industry for hundreds of years, and is therefore proven to be extremely reliable. Lead roofing, and sand-cast lead, in particular is ideal for old buildings such as churches or historical renovations, whereas milled lead roofing is a mass-produced alternative, used for precision and accuracy in homes and commercial buildings alike.

Reaching Out to Help

trac‘We are now in are 5th year of trading and we have had some very strange and interesting jobs to do over the past few years.’ said John Phillips from Trac-access Ltd.

These range from replacing woodpecker damaged shingles on a church spire in Chelmsford, Essex to helping reprogram hi tech lighting in the Arndale Shopping Centre Manchester.

It is very interesting to see the look on people’s faces when we turn up with our platform loaded on its exceptionally long trailer behind our 110 Landrover. Is it new they ask? When we tell them the platform is 2 years old they are amazed how good it still looks. We always pride ourselves in our platform and clean it after every hire as you never know where it is going to work next from a muddy field to a church floor so it has to be clean.

The platform has been very reliable and only has a few minor scratches and scraps to show for all the work we have carried out with it. We sometimes have to operate the platform for our clients or they are able to operate it for themselves with their own trained operatives. Every job is different and it always amazes me how versatile the Teupen Leo 23GT is. More uses are being found for this platform everyday from cleaning large windows in shopping malls, surveying high level roofs and fire damaged buildings, rebuilding chimney stacks, all types of roof repairs and even bats surveying. Tree surgeons like to use the Teupen Leo 23GT for its ability to get right up into the tree canopy giving them full and safe access to work on the tree as it is not always possible to climb some trees due to ‘Health and Safety Regulations’

Recently we have supplied the platform to a large utilities company who were overhauling 30 mtr high pylons near Warrington. Due to the recent heavy rain only a tracked platform could get across the farmers stubble fields and give them the safe access that they needed.

We have also held a demonstration day at a local private school with its historical buildings dating back hundreds of years. These buildings have many different roof levels and we were able to show how the LEO 23GT could help them gain safe access for all round maintenance from repairing several broken pieces of stain glass window in awkward areas having to cross over well kept lawns and paved areas also hidden valley gutters that get blocked with tennis balls and other discarded items that can lead to more serious problems if not dealt with quickly. The installation of fine mesh wire over stone window heads to stop birds from nesting in unwanted areas and making a mess over the front of newly cleaned stone elevations along with the fixing of loose slate on the chapel roof. This would normally take 2 men a whole day using several different kinds of ladder to get up and over the roof area to carry out this repair. We showed how all these jobs could be carried out relatively easily with the use of the Teupen LEO 23GT in a lot less time whilst saving thousands of pounds on scaffolding costs.

We will now be entering into the season of gutter cleaning and roof inspections where we will offer services of removing leaf mould and general debris also repairs and general maintenance where needed from small domestic properties to industrial units to help in giving the customer a trouble free winter. All our operatives are fully trained in all types of property maintenance and repair.
