Our remembrance is brought into focus by the restoration of significant buildings

IMG 20240607 WA0048 1024x768For over 145 years, Bakers of Danbury Heritage Building Contractors has been a trusted specialist in the conservation of ecclesiastical and heritage sites. Their commitment to quality and attention to detail means every project they undertake is built to last – blending traditional craftsmanship with modern restoration techniques.

They take great pride in ensuring that the buildings they work on not only stand the test of time but also continue to tell the stories they hold.

This year, as we mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day, Bakers’ Adrian Ward (Head of the Church Restoration Division) reflects on some of the important projects they’ve been involved in that connect with the history of both World Wars.

From military landmarks to local war memorials, their work ensures those pieces of history are preserved and continue to serve as reminders of our past for future generations.

Royal Gunpowder Mills, Waltham Abbey, Essex

The Royal Gunpowder Mills (pictured) played a crucial role in British military history for over 300 years, producing gunpowder for wars ranging from the Napoleonic era to the Second World War. We were privileged to restore one of the mills at this historically significant site, helping to protect a key part of our industrial and military heritage.

St Peter’s Church, Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire

At St Peter’s we carried out specialist conservation work on the church’s war memorial, which honours 20 local men who gave their lives in the First World War. The memorial, with its delicate stone-carved mouldings, required careful cleaning and restoration to ensure it remains a fitting tribute to those who served.

St Lawrence Jewry, City of London

In the heart of London we’ve carried out a restoration programme on St Lawrence Jewry, a church that dates back to 1136. During The Blitz it was badly damaged, including a direct hit from an incendiary bomb. As part of our restoration we preserved the weathervane atop the tower, which is believed to be made from the remains of that very bomb: a small part of the restoration project, yet an important and powerful reminder of the church’s resilience during wartime.

At Bakers of Danbury we offer expert conservation and restoration services for historic buildings, churches, museums and ancient monuments. From large-scale restoration programmes to skilled stonemasonry, roofing, spire repairs, re-ordering and modernisation, we bring a wealth of experience to every project. We also specialise in transforming churches into vibrant community spaces, ensuring they continue to serve the people around them. Our commitment is to preserve the architectural heritage of those buildings while adapting them for the needs of today and the future.
