Janie Lightfoot has been running her textile conservation and restoration studio for over 45 years.

Janie is an accredited conservator and has worked extensively in the public and private sectors, both nationally and internationally, including recent projects in America, South Africa, Denmark, Albania, and India.

The studio has a long history of working with churches, museums, art galleries, dealers, auction houses as well as a number of private clients and collectors.

Based in North West London and run out of two fully equipped studios, they are currently a team of nine, with a broad skill base, allowing them to take on a wide spectrum of projects, ranging from large three-dimensional textiles to fine intricate items.

Conservation

Along with the more traditional textile conservation practices such as wet and dry cleaning, stain removal, and all types of stitch repair, the studio also lines and mounts tapestries and embroideries and can advise on suitable hanging mechanisms if requested; they also specialise in the conservation and restoration of altar frontals and ecclesiastical vestments as well as rugs and carpets and other soft furnishings.

The experienced team is accustomed to working at height, on scaffolding and with large textiles, allowing them to work efficiently and safely during installations including the set up and deinstallation of exhibitions. They have carried out work in churches, historic houses, libraries, art galleries, museums, public spaces and private homes.

When working on site, all possible factors are considered, for example health and safety, limitations on space, the surrounding environment and site conditions.

The studio also offers a consultation service for textile and costume collections with display and conservation solutions, including a bespoke mannequin making and fitting service.

Documentation and Professional Photography

Janie works with collectors and archivists to provide a comprehensive service that works best for their collection. This involves working with collection management systems, documenting, and photography.

Conservation Framing

The studio has a fully equipped workshop, where they carry out conservation framing. Projects range from small samplers to large regimental colours or ecclesiastical textiles. UV filtered and antireflective glass and perspex can be supplied.

Collaborative Projects

The team often work with conservators of different disciplines including paper, paintings, metal conservators, photographic specialists and objects conservators.
