CISRS attends Newcastle College scaffolding day

CISRS Training Manager, Dave Mosley recently attended the annual Scaffolding Skills Challenge day at Newcastle College – to congratulate the young scaffolding apprentices.

The annual event was sponsored by NASC members, Pyeroy and saw Newcastle College-trained Year 1 and 2 scaffolding apprentices compete in front of an audience of North East employers to see who could erect the safest and most technically accurate structure.

Many key employers in the North East region attended to support their operatives taking part in the event.

Taking home the first place trophy were first year team Chris Maddison, 26 from Sunderland, Danny Calvert, 26 from Boldon Colliery, and Jonathan Wright, 19 from Prudhoe. And the winners from Year 2 of the course were Wayne Napier, 32 from Blaydon, Daniel Long, 28 from Blyth, and Chris Devlin, 25 from Sunderland.

David Mosley (CISRS Training Manager) said: “It’s great to see NASC members such as Pyeroy supporting apprenticeship training in the North East. Congratulations to all the young apprentices who won awards. Days like these are extremely important to applaud success in scaffolding training and boost apprentice numbers.”

Paul Watson, Divisional Manager at Pyeroy said: “Events like these are a vital way of highlighting the up and coming scaffolding talent we have here in the North East. While many of areas of construction are still experiencing a tough time, employers are crying out for new blood when it comes to scaffolding, particularly in the light of stricter rules around working at height. Employers now have a greater responsibility for the safety of their workforce.”

Meanwhile, Kevin Hartburn, CITB Construction Skills Apprentice Officer at Newcastle College, said: “The Scaffolding Skills Challenge is a fantastic event that gives young apprentices the chance to impress employers in the region with their new found skills and knowledge. It is our intention to take this challenge around the UK, with apprentices from other colleges taking part, with the aim of bringing more trainees and employers together.”
